The 14-20 October is National Carers Week. With more than 2.7 million unpaid carers throughout Australia, the chances are you know a carer, need a carer or are a carer.
Carers are unsung hero's, often finding themselves adopting the caring role without hesitation as the person may be a family member, close friend or it is a part of their profession. But this year, Carers Australia is asking carers to reflect on "why do you care"?
Through asking this question, Carers Australia is raising awareness of the diversity of carers and their caring roles and the fact that at any point in time someone can become a carer.
We asked our Aged Care Customer Service Team Leader, Celia the question "Why do you care"? Aside from her day-to-day role, Celia carers for her 80 year old mother.
"I care because I love my mum and she has shown me unconditional love. Caring is something that just comes naturally, I have never thought about it before," she said.
When asking Celia to share her story, she was quite taken back and said that she had never referred to herself as a carer before.
"I have always been close to mum and have never considered myself as a carer. I just support mum when she needs it and ensure that she has access to the best services available as English isn't her first language and this is a big barrier," she said.

Like most of the 2.7 million carers throughout Australia, Celia doesn't consider herself to be a carer but she, just like many others, is providing invaluable and immeasurable support to others through this selfless act.
"Being there for mum and to support her when possible means it's my turn to give back...mum has always supported me and my family. I am lucky to have her in my life and I wouldn't have it any other way," said Celia.
CatholicCare would like to say thank you to all carers for the invaluable contribution they make, not only to those they care for, but to the whole community.
